Indian Statistical Service Examination (ISS)

Introduction

The Indian Statistical Service (ISS) Examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to recruit Grade A officers for the Indian Statistical Services. These officers play a critical role in statistical analysis, data collection, and policy formation in various government departments and organizations.

Roles and Responsibility

ISS officers are responsible for statistical analysis, data collection, and interpretation in various sectors of the government. They work in departments such as the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, National Sample Survey Office, and other allied offices where their expertise is needed.

Their roles include:

Statistical Analysis: Conducting detailed statistical research and analysis to aid in policy-making.

Data Collection: Collecting and interpreting statistical data to support government initiatives.

Policy Formulation: Providing inputs and suggestions for the formulation of policies based on statistical data.

Implementation: Ensuring the effective implementation of statistical programs and policies.

Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification: Candidates must have a Bachelor’s Degree with Statistics/Mathematical Statistics/Applied Statistics as one of the subjects or a Master’s Degree in Statistics/Mathematical Statistics/Applied Statistics from a recognized university.

Age Limit: Candidates must be between 21 to 30 years of age as of 1st August of the examination year. Age relaxations are applicable as per government rules.

Steps to Apply for Exam

Online Registration: Visit the official UPSC website and complete the registration process.

Fill Application Form: Enter personal, educational, and other required details accurately.

Upload Documents: Upload scanned copies of photograph, signature, and other necessary documents.

Fee Payment: Pay the application fee through online banking, credit/debit card, or other available methods.

Submit Application: Review the filled details and submit the application form. Take a printout for future reference.

Exam Pattern

The ISS Examination consists of two parts:

Part I: Written Examination (1000 marks)

Part II: Viva Voce (200 marks)

The written examination comprises six papers:

Paper I: General English

Paper II: General Studies

Paper III, IV, V & VI: Statistics
